This week the overnight lows averaged -2oC at 1984m with daytime highs averaging 6oC. April 14 brought 3cms of snow at the Icefield Centre overnigth and we have received trace amounts every day since then. Strong winds have moved most of the new snow around with the W. Shoulder Direct on Andromeda and the Silverhorn looking particularly scoured with blue ice showing. I also watched a party of three climb the Shooting Gallery into the late afternoon on April 13 and to be honest it doesn't look fun. The upper couloir is steep snow and the climbers were using their tools for plunging rather than swinging.

The forecast this weekend looks pretty good in terms of temperature (highs below 0oC for Fri, Sat, Sun with nighttime lows getting down to -15oC) but a storm is expected to move in and drop anywhere from 7 - 15cms of snow beginning Thursday evening and lasting until Friday night. We'll see how much actually falls and what that does to the Avy forecast here. I will also give you the link for the CAC's weather page.

I also went on an ice hunt on my days off (after being shut down by April 14's snow) and the Sunwapta Gullies are in good shape still for another week or so. Shades is still good, the Wings and Stage are still climbable, Curtain Call has cracked underneath the crux, Meltout is sun affected mush, and Sister Moon is nowhere to be found. The Upper Weeping Wall is falling apart, the Lower Right side could still be done but I wouldn't touch it, the Shire has melted out, no word on Panther Falls/Cineplex.

Have a great weekend, happy and safe climbing (or skiing if the snow flies!)

G.

The Icefield Centre received about 25cms of snow overnight and the winds have been moderate with some strong gusts today. The snow is forecasted to continue throughout the day and into the evening, but at present it is accumulating at less than 1cm per hour.
