This week's theme at the Icefield area is WINTER! As in, winter has returned to the area for one more week. Overnight lows this week dipped as low as -16oC on April 20 but averaged -9oC. Daytime highs have averaged -3.5oC but it has been steadily getting warmer so expect highs around 3oC for Friday, and getting closer to 8oc for the weekend.

We have received snow almost every day in trace amounts at 1984m but it has accumulated at higher elevations. There has been no significant avalanache activity in the region but if the warm, clear weather comes as forecasted, expect to see some solar sloughing. Good skiing has been reported at Parker Ridge and on terrain where the wind has been depositing the snow.

As far as ice goes; the Beauty Creek area is still holding firm as is the Curtain Call area. I heard of parties climbing the right side of the Weeping Wall on Wednesday and Panther Falls as well, but I did not receive a report so I don't know anything more. There has been little to no action in the alpine but given the unstable weather this week that isn't too surprising. I know of some groups heading out this weekend so hopefully I will have more info to pass along when they return.

Have a great weekend, happy and safe climbing!

The Icefield Centre received 10cms of snow last night.

Also forgot to mention that as per Barry Blanchard's April 2 MCR report for Columbia/Andromeda most parties attempting to access the Icefield via the Athabasca Glacier are taking the climber's left approach and avoiding the serac threatened right side. The best access is to park at the climber's lot on the snocoach road and hike until you can access the glacier where the snocoaches drive down the lateral moraine. Stay on the extreme left to get past the first icefall, then traverse a few hundres metres to climber's right to the ramp which takes you over the second icefall, then traverse further to the right to access the Ramp through the third icefall.
