It is currently snowing at 1984m and we are expecting to see some accumulation overnight. Overnight lows have been in the 2oC range with daytime highs averaging 9oC. It is still a bit early in the week to forecast what will be happening here this weekend, but if the weather stays clear and we get overnight temps. around freezing good travel can be expected in the early morning. I was out ski touring on Sunday, May 4 and found the snow below treeline to hold my weight during the morning and boot top penetration in the afternoon.
I received word that the West Couloir of Athabasca (Slawinski/Takeda) didn't have any ice in it but still had some decent alpine-y feeling mixed climbing. Something to consider for those parties thinking about routes like the Shooting Gallery and Asteroid Alley this weekend. One party climbed AthaB NF but I didn't get to chat with them, it looked really nice though!
I also climbed Shades of Beauty last night and it is holding on, for another week or two, so anyone who is still needing their water ice fix should head out and give it a try.
I am off to the Yukon until June so you can either email me at grant.sikkes@gmail.com or at jasper.icefields@pc.gc.ca ATTN: Grant and when I have access to the web I'll update as best I can from up there.
