I checked cat tracks in my sources (I have seen Gadd's book Ken - excellent)and found it surprising that the size, at least, was the same for both lynx and cougar; the Evan Thomas Creek cat sightings sounded pretty cool - if not rather tense. Sometimes being out among the creatures is just as thrilling as the climbing or the ghost truck driving! For a number of years I have skiied that seldom travelled forest service road above and east of the climbs, and have usually seen the smaller bobcat tracks (lots of hare, deer of course & moose)
FYI: Around 2003 CPAWS started a campaign to protect more ETC habitat and I wrote a letter to some Minister sitting in an office about this one bobcat needing habitat protection and to stop making more golf courses (who knows if anyone even read it?). CPAWS supported the 2004 Final Management Plan for a reduction in size of the EVC Provincial Recreation Area and added 1849ha of it to the existing surrounding parks (Bow Valley Wildland Park and Spray Valley Prov.Park). It sounds like there's still a problem however with the existing developments in the EVCRA - they now may be able to expand 5-20%... I am checking with CPAWS to see if they are active here again. The young and enthuiastic gal in the office, said, oh yes, those personal letters can make a difference...but I know that Shaun (who knows)said awhile back in a post, that the bigger organizations do wield more political clout ultimately. So I too encourage climbers to get involved and help support these environmental group's campaigns(AWA too) and help keep these amazing climbing areas and the creatures protected. As to the terrific humerous postings of cougars in stilettoes, well, my feminist side says that's another discussion...
